Alvarez Stunner the Difference as Argentina Survive Swiss Test
Julian Alvarez produced a moment of magic in extra time to break Swiss hearts and send Argentina into the semis.
Argentina edged past a stubborn Switzerland side 3-1 after extra time in a quarter-final that had plenty of drama, according to Sky Sports. Alexis Mac Allister opened the scoring with a header from a Messi corner, before Switzerland levelled through Dan Ndoye, who finished neatly from a tight angle.
The match swung on a red card for Breel Embolo, shown a second yellow under the tournament's mistaken identity rules, reducing Switzerland to ten men. Julian Alvarez then produced a stunning goal to restore Argentina's lead, with Lautaro Martinez adding a late fourth to seal the result.
Argentina now march on to the semi-finals, where Messi's team will chase a third world title against England in Atlanta.
