Boos Ring Out as Trump and Infantino Take the Field
The US president and FIFA's boss were met with jeers from the MetLife Stadium crowd during the World Cup trophy ceremony.
The 2026 World Cup final trophy ceremony came with an unexpected soundtrack, as both US President Donald Trump and FIFA president Gianni Infantino were booed when they walked onto the pitch at MetLife Stadium, according to Reuters.
Trump, who arrived at the stadium by helicopter, remained on the podium with the Spanish players before stepping aside as captain Rodri prepared to lift the trophy. The president's presence at the final added significant layers of extra security to an already enormous occasion, with Secret Service agents screening entrants and journalists reporting waits of up to three hours in security lines.
Trump had already been at the centre of the tournament's biggest off-field controversy after Reuters reported he called Infantino to request a review of a red card shown to US striker Folarin Balogun in a group stage match against Bosnia and Herzegovina.
