FIFA Overruled Its Own Staff on World Cup Ticket Prices
FIFA leadership pushed through a dynamic pricing strategy for the 2026 tournament against the advice of its own US-based staff, The Guardian has revealed.
FIFA's leadership overruled internal staff who had opposed the use of dynamic pricing for the 2026 World Cup, according to an investigation by The Guardian. The organisation's executive committee approved the pricing strategy despite objections from US-based employees.
FIFA is understood to have viewed the 2026 tournament as a once-in-a-generation chance to maximise revenue, pointing to the scale of demand and the spending power of the American market in particular. In a statement to The Guardian, FIFA insisted all parts of the organisation are aligned on pricing.
The Guardian reports that the 2018 bid book submitted by the US, Canada and Mexico mentioned dynamic pricing as a concept but said at the time they were not actively pursuing it. The gap between that position and what was eventually implemented is now drawing scrutiny.
For fans who felt priced out of attending matches, the report adds context to frustrations that have grown throughout the tournament.
