Forlan Steps Up as Bielsa Exits Uruguay in Disarray

The Guardian reports that Diego Forlan, the former Manchester United and Atletico Madrid striker, is poised to take over as Uruguay manager on a temporary basis until March 2027.

Bielsa left the role after Uruguay were knocked out at the group stage, having managed just two draws from their three games. According to The Guardian, Bielsa accepted responsibility for the poor results and performances, with tensions in the dressing room also reported to have played a part in his departure.

Forlan had two largely disappointing seasons at Old Trafford early in his career before finding his best form in Spain. The Uruguayan Football Federation president, Ignacio Alonso, is said to have confirmed the appointment publicly. It marks a significant moment for a nation that had hoped to make a much deeper run at this tournament.
