Germany Suffer First Penalty Shoot-Out Loss in World Cup History
Four-time champions Germany have been stunned out of the World Cup at the last-32 stage by Paraguay, losing a shoot-out for the very first time at the tournament.
In one of the most shocking results of the 2026 World Cup, Germany have been eliminated in the round of 32 by Paraguay, according to Sky Sports. The four-time world champions fell behind to a Julio Enciso opener before Kai Havertz levelled, sending the match to extra-time and then a penalty shoot-out.
It proved to be historic for all the wrong reasons. Germany had never lost a World Cup penalty shoot-out before Tuesday, but Havertz, Newcastle's Nick Woltemade and Bayern Munich defender Jonathan Tah all failed to convert, handing Paraguay a famous victory.
The drama was compounded by a controversial moment in extra-time, when a powerful Tah header was ruled out by VAR following a soft foul call on goalkeeper Orlando Gill. Paraguay now advance to face the winner of France versus Sweden in the last 16.
