Iran File FIFA Complaint Over World Cup Travel Block
Iran's football federation has taken its pre-match travel dispute to FIFA after its request to arrive in host cities two days before matches was denied.
Iran are set to lodge a formal complaint with FIFA over travel restrictions placed on their World Cup squad, according to Reuters. The federation says its coaching staff had planned for the team to arrive in each host city two days before every match to ensure players were in optimal physical and tactical shape, only to have that request refused for their opening game against New Zealand.
The situation comes ahead of Iran's next group fixture, a clash with Belgium on 21 June in Los Angeles. The federation is framing the issue as one of basic competitive fairness, arguing that other teams are not facing the same constraints.
FIFA has not yet responded publicly to the complaint. The dispute adds an unexpected off-pitch dimension to Iran's tournament as they look to build on their opening match and stay alive in the group stage.
