Japan Make World Cup History in Tournament's 1,000th Match
Japan thrashed Tunisia 4-0 to become the first Asian side to score four goals in a single World Cup game, in the tournament's landmark 1,000th fixture.
Japan delivered a stunning performance in Monterrey on Friday, routing Tunisia 4-0 in what Reuters reports was the FIFA World Cup's 1,000th ever match. It was a milestone occasion and Japan made sure it was memorable.
According to Reuters, striker Ayase Ueda was central to Japan's dominance, netting twice including a header from a deep cross late in the match. Junya Ito added a third after being set up by Ueda with a lofted pass, as Japan ran riot in a commanding display.
The result, as Reuters notes, makes Japan the first Asian nation to score four goals in a World Cup match. They now sit level on four points with the Netherlands in Group F, leaving their knockout stage hopes very much alive.
For Tunisia, the defeat is a brutal one. Playing their first game under new coach Herve Renard following a heavy 5-1 loss to Sweden, they become the third team eliminated from the tournament, joining Haiti in heading home early.
