Jayden Adams: South Africa's World Cup Hero Dies at 25
South Africa midfielder Jayden Adams, who played in all three of his country's historic group stage games at the 2026 World Cup, has died aged 25.
South Africa has lost one of the young faces of its most memorable World Cup campaign. According to Reuters, midfielder Jayden Adams died on Saturday, with the country's sports ministry confirming the news. No cause of death was given.
Adams, 25, started South Africa's group stage fixtures against Mexico and the Czech Republic before coming off the bench in the decisive 1-0 win over South Korea. That victory sent Bafana Bafana into the knockout rounds for the first time in the country's World Cup history.
The team's fairytale run came to an end against Canada in the round of 16, but Adams had already played his part in writing a proud chapter for South African football. His passing leaves the sport mourning a talent taken far too soon.
