Jonathan David Hat-Trick Fires Canada to Historic 6-0 Rout of Qatar

Canada have written themselves into the history books, recording their first ever men's World Cup victory in emphatic fashion with a 6-0 demolition of Qatar, according to Sky Sports and The Guardian.

Jonathan David, already Canada's all-time leading male goalscorer, took his record even further with a hat-trick, adding to Cyle Larin's opener. Qatar were reduced to nine men after red cards for Homam El Amin and Assim Madibo, the latter dismissed for a foul that caused a serious leg injury to Canadian midfielder Ismael Kone. Nathan Saliba also added to the rout.

The Guardian noted that all 26 Canadian players are now part of history as the first men's squad to win at a World Cup for the country. The celebrations were slightly muted, however, by Kone's injury, which will concern Jesse Marsch's squad ahead of their push for the knockout stages.

A scoreboard appearance from all-time international top scorer Christine Sinclair drew one of the loudest cheers of the evening from the crowd, a moment that captured just how much this occasion meant to Canadian football.
