Mahrez Bids Farewell to Algeria After Swiss Exit
Riyad Mahrez has announced his retirement from international football after Algeria's round of 32 defeat to Switzerland.
One of Algeria's greatest ever players has closed the chapter on his international career. According to beIN Sports, Riyad Mahrez confirmed after the 2-0 loss to Switzerland that his appearance in Vancouver was his final match for the Fennec Foxes.
The former Manchester City star had been one of Algeria's main attacking threats heading into the tournament, but Switzerland managed to keep him quiet throughout the contest in Vancouver, with goals from Breel Embolo and Dan Ndoye ending Algeria's World Cup journey.
Mahrez leaves international football having given Algeria years of service at the highest level. His retirement marks the end of a generation for a side that will now look to rebuild ahead of future tournaments.
