Norway's supporters have become the breakout stars of the 2026 World Cup, with their Viking row chant going viral around the globe, according to The Guardian. The synchronised rowing celebration, performed en masse by thousands of fans back home in Oslo and Bergen, generated enough sound to be detected by seismologists as an earthquake when Norway advanced to the last 16.
Star striker Erling Haaland shared a clip of the squad joining in, writing that it was "bigger than football" and telling reporters the sight of thousands rowing together gave him goosebumps, per The Guardian.
The tradition has not been without controversy. Some critics drew uncomfortable comparisons between the Viking imagery and far-right symbolism, though Norwegian MP Mimir Kristjansson dismissed such concerns as absurd, insisting that Norway has every right to bring its own culture to the tournament.
Norway's run to the last 16 is their best World Cup performance since 1998, and with Haaland leading the charge, the whole nation is rowing in the same direction.
