Activists planned a rally against World Cup sponsor Hyundai ahead of a Mexico fixture, linking the brand to a steel firm connected to disappearances in the state of Michoacan.
The 2026 World Cup in Mexico has been shadowed by protest, and according to The Guardian, that pressure intensified with activists planning a rally against tournament sponsor Hyundai before a Mexico game.
The protests draw a line between Hyundai and Ternium, a Latin American steel manufacturer, over the alleged disappearances of men from the community of Aquila in the state of Michoacan. Ternium has categorically denied any involvement in the disappearances, and Hyundai declined to comment on the planned action.
It follows an earlier wave of unrest around the Azteca Stadium, where striking teachers forced road closures before the opening match and around 200 protesters clashed with police. The demonstrations reflect deep tensions surrounding the tournament's presence in Mexico.
