Qatar Stun Switzerland With Last-Gasp Header
Captain Boualem Khoukhi headed home deep in stoppage time to earn Qatar a dramatic share of the points against Switzerland in their Group B opener.
Qatar have earned their first ever World Cup point in the most dramatic fashion, according to The Guardian. Trailing to a Breel Embolo penalty from the 17th minute, the Qataris absorbed wave after wave of pressure from a Swiss side that mustered 26 attempts on goal.
Just when it seemed Switzerland had done enough to bank three points, Qatar captain Boualem Khoukhi met a cross from the left by Homam Ahmed and powered a header home in stoppage time. The final score of 1-1 sparked chaotic scenes in the stands.
Switzerland will face Bosnia next in Los Angeles, while Qatar take on co-hosts Canada in Vancouver, both sides knowing the group picture is very much alive after this surprise share of the spoils.
