Severe Heat Recorded at Two World Cup Matches, Study Shows
An independent analysis has found that two World Cup fixtures were played in conditions classified as severe heat, raising fresh concerns about player and fan safety.
Two matches at the 2026 World Cup were played under conditions classified as severe heat, according to an analysis reported by The Guardian. The findings have intensified scrutiny of the conditions in which players, officials and fans are being asked to operate at this summer's tournament.
FIFA says it has taken a range of steps to manage the risk, including scheduling many matches in late afternoon and evening slots and deploying meteorologists at match venues. For spectators, stadiums are activating extra cooling capacity through shaded areas, misting systems, cooling buses and wider water distribution.
A new medical protocol for treating heat exertion has also been introduced, with cooling bags set to be used for the first time at a World Cup. FIFA added it will continue to monitor conditions in real time and is ready to apply contingency plans should extreme weather events occur.
