The UK Prime Minister has backed a FIFA investigation after Argentina players displayed a political banner referencing the Falkland Islands following their semi-final win.
UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has voiced support for FIFA to investigate Argentina players who displayed a banner asserting their country's claim to the Falkland Islands after their semi-final victory over England, according to The Guardian.
A Downing Street spokesperson confirmed Starmer watched the match and backed potential action, stating that while the World Cup has been fantastic, politics should stay out of football. The spokesperson was clear that the UK's position on the Falklands remains unchanged.
MP Peter Kyle had already described the banner as an "egregious violation" of the rules against political activity in football. FIFA has not yet announced whether formal proceedings will follow.
Argentina face Spain in Sunday's final, and the political row has added an extra layer of tension to the build-up.
