Torres Steps Off Bench to Crown Spain World Champions
Ferran Torres came on as a substitute and fired home a rebound in extra time to give Spain a 1-0 victory over Argentina in the World Cup final.
Spain are world champions for the second time, according to Reuters, after substitute Ferran Torres settled a tense final against Argentina with a rebound finish early in the second period of extra time.
Argentina were reduced to ten men when Enzo Fernandez received a second booking in stoppage time at the end of normal time, and Spain made their numerical advantage count through Torres shortly after.
It was a hard-fought and at times uninspiring contest, Reuters notes, but the result was ultimately a triumph for Spain's collective approach over the defending champions. Lionel Messi, making his third World Cup final appearance, finished on the losing side.
