USA's Historic Night: Pochettino's Side Romp Into History
The United States produced a record-breaking World Cup performance on home soil, thrilling a packed SoFi Stadium and winning hearts across the country.
Friday night at SoFi Stadium was unlike anything the United States men's national team has produced at a World Cup. According to The Guardian, the four-goal victory set a new record for the most goals scored by the USA at a men's World Cup match, capping a performance that was described inside the dressing room as a "dreamy night" in Southern California.
The Guardian reports that a 3-0 first-half showing drew comparisons to the famous 3-0 lead the USA built against Portugal at the 2002 tournament, a result that famously stopped traffic across Europe. This performance, on home soil, may carry even more weight.
Coach Mauricio Pochettino was effusive after the final whistle, telling reporters that his side are "winning a lot of fans" and adding fans for the sport itself. Striker Folarin Balogun called it a "dreamy night", while Christian Pulisic declined to call it the greatest performance of all time, preferring to let the facts speak for themselves.
With a nation watching and a tournament just getting started, the USA have announced themselves in the loudest possible terms.
